The Vetsuisse Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Berne offers structured 3 to 4-year continuing education programmes in the form of residency programmes in 18 specialist areas of clinical and paraclinical veterinary medicine.
These are official, nationally and internationally established specialisation programmes which are recognised either by the European Board for Veterinary Specialisation (EBVS), the American Board of Veterinary Specialties (ABVS) or the Society of Swiss Veterinarians (GST). These structured specialisation programmes are based on the guidelines of the corresponding umbrella organisation (EBVS, ABVS or GST) and are concluded with a selective examination. In order to be admitted to the examination, proof of scientific activity within the framework of the continuing education programme must be provided (in the form of one or more research publications in specialist journals).
A specialisation within an EBVS or ABVS-recognised programme is the highest professional qualification in veterinary medicine worldwide.
