Vetsuisse Faculty

Promotion of early career researchers

VetMENT Mentoring Programme

VetMENT is a mentoring programme open for ALL early-stage researchers at the Vetsuisse Faculty at the University of Bern. It supports early-stage researchers in targeted career planning and in building an academic network. It is aimed at all doctoral students, PhD students, residents and postdocs of the faculty, and is open to both women and men.

Goals

VetMENT is designed to provide individual support to early-stage researchers and has four main goals:

  • Actively supporting excellent early-stage researchers at the Vetsuisse Faculty in their research careers.
  • Facilitating connections between young scientists and outstanding national and international researchers to expand their network and assist them in building their own.
  • Enhancing their skills through workshop trainings and preparing them for their academic careers.
  • Providing early-stage researchers with an informal platform to gather and exchange information and experiences.

Originally implemented in the United States, mentoring has now become widely utilized in academia and the private sector. It aims to promote young individuals, particularly women, for high-ranking leadership positions. In the context of science, mentoring also seeks to critically assess scientific institutions and drive structural and cultural changes at universities (e.g., addressing the issue of part-time work at higher levels of status).

Programme content

The Programme will be held in English. The mentoring cycle lasts approximately 18 months and consists of three components:

One-to-one mentoring is a relationship system between a professionally experienced, older person (mentor) and a less experienced, younger person (mentee). Mentors provide support beyond the regular supervisor-subordinate-dependent relationship by offering advice, leveraging their networks, and helping mentees understand the mechanisms and unwritten rules of the organization.

Mentees select a mentor based on their professional interests, who will accompany them throughout the programme. It is advisable to choose mentors who work in a similar field to ensure a meaningful overlap of interests. The project coordinator assists mentees in finding suitable mentors and provides support for any administrative questions. However, the success of the meetings and discussions ultimately lies with the mentees and mentors themselves. Mentees and mentors independently determine the frequency and format of their interactions.

Independent of the One-to-One Mentoring, three mandatory workshops take place:n thi

  1. Kick-off workshop (one day): Mentees get to know each other, gain insights into what is required for successful mentoring, and receive essential information regarding career planning.
  2. Intermediate reflection workshop (half day): This workshop provides mentees with the chance to share their experiences thus far and exchange knowledge among one another. At the same time, there is space to discuss challenges and difficulties as well as joint approaches to solutions.
  3. Conclusion workshop (one day): This workshop concludes the cycle. It serves to exchange experiences between the mentees and to evaluate the programme. Upon mentees' requests, there is the possibility of delving deeper into specific topics.

An integral aspect of mentoring is networking among mentees and sharing information with peers. Therefore, a joint lunch is organised on a monthly or bi-monthly basis (depending on the mentees' preferences) by the project coordinator. This informal gathering allows mentees to exchange their experiences and, if desired, delve deeper into individual topics of interest.
