VetMENT is a mentoring programme open for ALL early-stage researchers at the Vetsuisse Faculty at the University of Bern. It supports early-stage researchers in targeted career planning and in building an academic network. It is aimed at all doctoral students, PhD students, residents and postdocs of the faculty, and is open to both women and men.
Goals
VetMENT is designed to provide individual support to early-stage researchers and has four main goals:
- Actively supporting excellent early-stage researchers at the Vetsuisse Faculty in their research careers.
- Facilitating connections between young scientists and outstanding national and international researchers to expand their network and assist them in building their own.
- Enhancing their skills through workshop trainings and preparing them for their academic careers.
- Providing early-stage researchers with an informal platform to gather and exchange information and experiences.
Originally implemented in the United States, mentoring has now become widely utilized in academia and the private sector. It aims to promote young individuals, particularly women, for high-ranking leadership positions. In the context of science, mentoring also seeks to critically assess scientific institutions and drive structural and cultural changes at universities (e.g., addressing the issue of part-time work at higher levels of status).
