58 Master's degree graduates

On April 24, 2026, the Vetsuisse Faculty in Bern celebrated its 58 most recent master’s graduates. After five and a half years, the veterinary students completed their studies with the degree “Master of Veterinary Medicine”.

Dean Gertraud Schüpbach emphasized on Friday evening that the 58 veterinarians had to work hard for their success. Now they can reap the rewards: “Young veterinarians perform very important tasks and are in high demand. Their training also enjoys an excellent reputation internationally.” In his congratulatory remarks, Micaël Klopfenstein, co-chair of the Bern Teaching Commission, also thanked the graduates’ families for their support over the past few years—they shared the highs, the lows, the joys, and the frustrations.

The end of a formative phase of life

“Nowhere else could you have acquired a better education in veterinary medicine, whether you go into private practice or pursue a career in research,” remarked Virginia Richter, Rector of the University of Bern, in her commencement address to the graduates. On the one hand, the Vetsuisse Faculty contributes “to Switzerland’s international competitiveness in veterinary medicine, and thus also to the reputation of the entire university.” On the other hand, it remains regionally rooted, whether in the care of companion animals and farm animals, in the research and control of animal diseases, in animal welfare, in the monitoring of food of animal origin, or in the training of veterinarians.

“A practical and fulfilling course of study, interesting encounters with animals and people, inspiring faculty, insight into the scientific world, the opportunity to develop your own ideas, and friendships that may last a lifetime.” Today marks the end of a formative phase of life. Along with her congratulations, Richter expressed the hope that the young veterinarians would carry into their professional lives not only the positive experiences but also the motivation with which they began their studies.

2025 Alumni Master's Award Goes to Brühlhart, Gmür, and Küng

Peter Stucki, Vice President of the Alumni Organization, then presented awards for the best master’s theses. This year’s winners were Livia Brühlhart, Lisa Gmür, and Betting Küng. Accompanied by the music of the Swiss Jazz Connection and the photographer’s flashbulbs, the master’s graduates celebrated together with their friends, family, and colleagues at the von Roll Areal.
